Born in Brussels, Belgium, Amédée Bourson was the son of Pierre Philippe Bourson and Françoise Élisabeth Antoinette Amans. His formal artistic training took place at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, where he studied under Ernest Slingeneyer, Jean-Baptiste De Landtsheer, and François-Joseph Navez. His technical proficiency was recognized early when he received the first prize for drawing from antique figures in 1852. Seeking further refinement, he traveled to Paris to study under Jules Coignet. Bourson’s professional journey included exhibiting at the Salon de Bruxelles in 1857 and the Salon in Paris in 1861. Beyond his own practice, he served as a drawing teacher at the Athénée Royal de Bruxelles and eventually succeeded Henri Hendrickx as the director of the Académie des Beaux-Arts de Saint-Josse-ten-Noode.
The painter's oeuvre is characterized primarily by his focus on portraiture. His compositions are described as harmonious, sober, and precise, often utilizing a palette of brown and gray tones that can result in an austere aesthetic. His signature is recorded as A.Bourson.
