The lines of a Dutch life Gerrit Toorenburgh lived through the middle decades of the eighteenth century, moving between the streets of Amsterdam and the quiet of Nijkerk. Born in 1732, his early years were shaped by the training he received under Jan ten Compe. This apprenticeship grounded him in the technical demands of the craft, teaching him to observe the way light settles on stone and how water reflects a heavy sky.
