The Artistic Evolution of Max Stern Max Stern was a German painter and graphic artist of Jewish ancestry, associated with the Düsseldorfer Malerschule. His formal training began at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he studied under instructors such as Adolf Schill, Peter Janssen, and Eduard von Gebhardt until 1892. He later transferred to the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, working with the genre painter Carl von Marr. In 1893, he was the youngest participant in an exhibition of the Munich Secession.
