He was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1896, the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in 1898, and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1900. Furthermore, he was a founding member of the Royal Miniature Society, serving as its vice-president until 1913, after which he was granted honorary member status.
As an illustrator, Hurst was remarkably productive, contributing to over 20 published books. His notable collaborations include illustrating Mark Twain's The American Claimant. His artwork also appeared in prominent periodicals such as Punch, Harper's Weekly, Vanity Fair, The Idler, and the Illustrated London News.
