In the bustling streets of Haarlem, a young man named Petrus Chrisostimus Kloes began a life that would eventually lead him far from the steam and scent of his father's laundry. Though his early years were spent working in the family business, the pull of the canvas was a quiet, persistent force. By the age of twenty-four, he made the decisive choice to leave the laundry behind and embrace the life of a professional painter. It was a path that offered little financial security at first, yet it was the only one that truly called to him. He was a man who taught himself the fundamentals of his craft, honing his skills through solitary practice and a deep, innate curiosity for the world around him.
As his talent matured, Kloes sought to refine his raw instincts under the guidance of H.F. Boot in a studio located on the Klein Heiligland. This period of formal instruction helped transform his self-taught methods into a deliberate and powerful language of form. He became a fixture in the local art scene, eventually joining the Haarlemse kunstenaarskring ‘Kunst Zij Ons Doel’ (KZOD). His life was shared with his wife, Annie van den Haak, and together they raised four children, all while he navigated the challenges of making a living through his art.
A Hand of Robust Texture
The work of Piet Kloes is defined by a physical presence that demands attention. He did not merely apply paint; he built it upon the surface. His style is characterized by heavy application and robust brushstrokes that give his subjects a sense of weight and permanence. While many of his still lifes lean toward sober, darker tones, he possessed a particular ability to capture the movement of the heavens. He could render dynamic cloud formations with a naturalism that felt alive, contrasting the stillness of his objects with the shifting energy of the sky.

His paintings have found their way into the halls of the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem and the Deventer Museum, as well as the Museum van Bommel van Dam in Venlo. These placements speak to the enduring quality of his vision, moving his work from the private studios of Haarlem into the public consciousness. Even after his passing in 1974, his influence remained, eventually leading to the establishment of the Piet Kloes Foundation in 2012 to honor his contribution to the arts.
