The Life and Art of Thomas Ryan

Thomas Ryan, also known as Thomas Darby Ryan, was a multifaceted figure whose life spanned from his birth in London, United Kingdom to his passing in Auckland, New Zealand. An accomplished artist, Ryan studied at the Académie Julian in Paris between 1892 and 1893. He was particularly noted for his work in watercolours, focusing his creative vision on landscapes, seascapes, and portraits of Māori. His artistic contributions were recognized through frequent exhibitions at the Auckland Society of Arts over a period of 36 years, as well as at the 1889 New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition in Dunedin.

His portfolio includes notable works such as:

Beyond the canvas, Ryan led a diverse life as a rugby union player, a rugby union match official, and a master mariner. He served as a captain on Lakes Rotorua and Taupō, and was a member of the first New Zealand national rugby side in 1884.
