A Life of Ambition and Drift

Charles Philippe Hippolyte de Thierry was not a painter, but rather a nineteenth-century adventurer whose life was defined by the pursuit of sovereignty in distant lands. Born in 1793, likely in Grave, Netherlands, his early years were shaped by the displacement of a French family fleeing the Revolution. This sense of movement followed him from England to North America and eventually into the Pacific. He moved through the world with a restless energy, seeking to carve out a kingdom where none existed.

His academic years at Oxford and Cambridge brought him into contact with figures who would shape his later colonial ambitions. It was during this time that he met the Ngāpuhi chief Hongi Haki and the missionary Thomas Kendall. Through these connections, de Thierry arranged the purchase of 40,000 acres in Hokianga, Northland, for the remarkably low price of thirty-six axes. This transaction became the foundation for his grander, though ultimately unfulfilled, designs for a private state.

The Quest for a Pacific Kingdom

By 1835, de Thierry had reached the Marquesas Islands, where he declared himself King of Nuku Hiva. His ambitions were not merely personal but political, as he sought to establish a realm built on free trade and medicine. He wrote to British officials with clear intentions to act as a sovereign chief, yet his authority was frequently contested by established colonial interests and local leaders alike.

The attempt to settle in New Zealand met with significant resistance. While some chiefs granted him a much smaller plot of 800 acres, the larger claims he had orchestrated were repudiated by rangatira such as Tāmati Wāka Nene and Eruera Maihi Patuone. The settlement itself struggled under the weight of internal disorder; his followers eventually rioted and abandoned him, leaving him to rely on the charity of the Māori people. Despite these setbacks, he continued to present inflated accounts of his successes to France, hoping to secure a French colony under his own governance.

      Final Years in Auckland

The signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840 effectively ended any possibility of de Thierry establishing an independent dominion. The era of the private adventurer-king was closing as British annexation took hold. Stripped of his political aspirations, he transitioned into a quieter, more conventional life in Auckland.

In his final years, the man who once claimed royal titles worked as a piano teacher. This period of stability lasted until his sudden death on 8 July 1864. His life remains a study in the era of Pacific exploration, marked by the tension between individual grandiosity and the encroaching reality of colonial administration.
