      Early Life and Artistic Training

Félix-Auguste Clément was born in Donzère, France, on 20 May 1826. His early years were shaped by the quiet discipline of formal study. Between 1843 and 1848, he spent his time at the École nationale des beaux-arts de Lyon. There, he worked under the guidance of Jean-Claude Bonnefond, learning the foundational mechanics of his craft before moving toward the center of the French art world.

In 1848, he arrived in Paris to enter the École des Beaux-Arts. This period of study brought him into the studios of Michel Martin Drolling and François-Édouard Picot. He spent these years refining his technique and observing the nuances of light and form under their instruction. His progress through these institutions led to a significant recognition in 1856, when he was awarded the Prix de Rome. This honor followed his painting of the return of young Tobias, a work that marked a definitive moment in his early development.

      Travels and Orientalist Commissions

After spending several years in Rome, Clément traveled to Egypt in 1862. He spent his time there sketching monuments and capturing scenes of princely activities. His presence in the region led to several commissions, many of which were requested by the Khedive. He moved through the landscape, documenting the light and the structures of the area.

His work in Egypt included a specific commission from Prince Halim to decorate the Choubrah palace near Cairo. For this task, he painted Scènes de chasse à la gazelle. These works focused on the specific movements and settings of the local environment. By 1868, he had returned to France.

Later, the French government commissioned him to travel to Padua. His task was to copy the paintings of Andrea Mantegna. This work took him to the Eremitani convent, where he focused on the existing frescoes.

      Exhibitions and Teaching Career

Clément’s presence in the international art circuit was marked by several major exhibitions. He showed his work at the Second Annual International Exhibition of London in 1872. A year later, he was part of the Expo Vienna 1873. His work also appeared at the Exposition Universelle in 1878. These appearances placed his scenes before a wide audience across Europe.

Between 1874 and 1877, he held a position as a professor at the École Nationale in Lyon. This period of teaching allowed him to pass on his technical knowledge within an academic setting. He eventually left this role and retired from teaching after those three years. His time in Lyon remains a distinct chapter in his professional life, situated between his travels and his later years.

      Notable Works and Style

Clément’s brushwork often settles on landscapes and portraits defined by bright colors. He had a way of capturing figures that carried a sense of nobility, often holding themselves in hieratic, still poses. These subjects appear composed and steady, as if caught in a moment of quiet ritual. His work moves between the broad light of a landscape and the specific, detailed presence of a person.

In his depictions of daily life, there is a focus on the specificities of the setting. One such piece, Women Selling Water and Oranges on the Road to Heliopolis, Near Cairo, shows this interest in the textures of a specific place. Another work, Vendeuses d'oranges à Héliopolis, is held in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nice. These paintings reflect his time spent observing the light and the people of the region.

      Later Years and Death

The final years of Clément's career were marked by a struggle with his health. In 1877, his work on a commission to copy a Mantegna fresco in Padua was cut short. The task, which involved the Eremitani convent, remained unfinished because of his declining physical state. This interrupted period saw him move away from the formal teaching roles he had held in Lyon, eventually leading to his retirement.

Seeking a change in climate to help his recovery, he traveled to North Africa. He spent the winter of 1887–1888 in Algiers, hoping the air might restore his strength. He died there on 2 February 1888. While some records place his passing in Algiers, other accounts suggest he died in Cherchell.
