      The Academy and the War

Born in Lviv, Leo Bernhard Eichhorn spent his formative years absorbing the traditions of the Vienna Academy. Between 1889 and 1896, he studied under Kasimir Pochwalski and August Eisenmenger, developing a foundation in the classical styles that would define his career. His early life was shaped by the rigorous discipline of these masters, leading him to become a member of the Genossenschaft bildender Künstler in Vienna by 1903.

The stability of his artistic life was interrupted by the onset of the First World War. In 1917, he answered the call of duty, serving in the Landsturm for the Wiener Infanterieregiment Nr. 4. His experiences on the front lines were not merely personal but also observational. He was eventually admitted to the art group of the k.u.k. Kriegspressequartier, serving as a war artist. His sketches and paintings from this period took him through Transylvania and to the Italian front, capturing the realities of a world in conflict.

      Artistic Focus and Legacy

Eichhorn’s work primarily focused on genre and history painting, capturing scenes of human life and significant historical moments. His technical skill allowed him to move between the delicate nature of black chalk on paper and the more substantial requirements of oil portraiture. His influence extended far beyond the borders of Austria, reaching as far as South America.

His professional life was marked by several key transitions:

In his later years, he settled in Buenos Aires, where he continued to shape the next generation of artists. He taught painting to Elisabeth Wild at the Círculo de Bellas Artes, passing on the classical training he had mastered in Europe. This connection highlights his role as a bridge between the old-world traditions of Vienna and the evolving art scene in Argentina. He remained active in the art community until his death in 1956.
