Artistic Style and Composition
The painting features a female nude at her toilette, surrounded by various objects such as a sponge, soap, and an ornate pottery pitcher. The artist has multiplied details that give the scene a more symbolic meaning, inviting the viewer to interpret the work in a more erotic way. The color range is reduced to a palette of greens and blues, conjuring up the night, while the young woman's orange-brown body emerges sharply against this dark background. Symbolism plays a significant role in this painting, with the term "lustral" referring to medieval mysticism and the idea of purification. The artist invites the viewer to attend this intimate purification, almost by breaking and entering.
