The Life and Art of Marjorie Phillips Born Marjorie Acker in Bourbon, Indiana, she was raised in Ossining, New York. After beginning to draw as a child, she pursued formal training at the Art Students League, graduating in 1918 after studying under Boardman Robinson. Her artistic talent was encouraged by her uncles, Reynolds Beal and Gifford Beal. Following her marriage to Duncan Phillips in 1921, she moved to Washington, D.C.
