Early Life, Family and Training

Dirk de Vries Lam was born in Leeuwarden on 20 January 1869. He grew up in a household where his father, Herman Lam, worked as a pharmacist, and his mother was Willempje née De Vries-Reilingh. His first steps into drawing began at the Hogere Burgerschool in Leeuwarden, where he took his initial lessons. These early years in Leeuwarden provided the foundation for a life spent observing the lines and structures of the built environment.

In 1888, he moved to Amsterdam to study at the School of Applied Arts, a period of training that lasted until 1891. During these years, he worked under the instruction of Jan Derk Huibers and Jacobus Roeland de Kruijff. His education continued through advanced studies at the Rijksakademie, where he studied under August Allebé and Pierre Cuypers. This rigorous training focused on both the creative and technical aspects of his craft.

Upon completing his studies, Dirk de Vries Lam held certificates in both drawing and engineering. This dual qualification reflected a disciplined approach to his training, blending the precision of technical drafting with the observational requirements of a painter. His early years were defined by this balance of academic study and the practical acquisition of technical skill.

Professional Career and Teaching

His professional life moved through several classrooms and studios. He began as an instructor at the Teekenschool voor Kunstambachten in Amsterdam. By 1895, he had moved to Enkhuizen to teach at the Burgerschool. His work took him through Monnickendam, Volendam, and Hoorn, settling into a steady rhythm of instruction and practice. In 1903, he took on the role of Director at the Academie Minerva in Groningen, a position he held for many years.

At the Academie Minerva, he focused on the practical side of making things. He expanded the curriculum by adding more classes for the applied arts. Students under his direction studied lithography, batik, and upholstery. In 1905, he brought architecture into the teaching program as well. He encouraged his students to paint directly from nature, moving away from the habit of copying existing works to find their own way of seeing.
