A Life Cut Short
Erik Wedelin lived a life that was defined by its brevity. Born in 1850 in Sweden, he possessed a quiet talent for capturing the natural world through both painting and drawing. His education began at the Valand school and continued at the Academy in Stockholm, where he refined the skills that would define his brief career. He was a man of the outdoors, drawn to the light and atmosphere of the landscape, a passion that would eventually lead him away from his home to the artistic circles of Germany.
Between 1873 and 1875, Wedelin lived in Düsseldorf, a period that shaped his perspective as a landscape painter. He was part of the Düsseldorf School, a movement that emphasized a direct connection to the subject matter. However, his time as a creator was unexpectedly curtailed. At the age of 31, he succumbed to pulmonary tuberculosis, leaving behind a body of work that remains a fragment of what might have been. His output was small, yet the pieces he did complete reflect a high level of technical skill and a deep sensitivity to the environment.
The Natural World in Oil and Paper
Wedelin focused on en plein air painting, working directly in the open air to catch the immediate effects of light and weather. After studying at the Gothenburg Museum of Art's drawing school and the Stockholm Academy, he became a landscape painter of the Düsseldorf School. He used this method to capture the moods of the Swedish and German landscapes on canvas and paper. His work shows a careful observation of nature, from the heavy atmosphere of an overcast sky to the textures of rocky terrain. He sought to record the specific atmosphere of a place as it appeared to him in the moment.

His ability to capture the essence of a moment, even in small-scale works like his oil on paper studies, marks him as a significant figure in the tradition of landscape painting.
