Herman van Rossum lived a life defined by the precision of the hand and the quiet observation of the landscape. Born on 2 February 1910 in Alphen (West Maas en Waal), he moved through the world as a man of many disciplines. He was a teacher, a draftsman, and a painter, but perhaps most notably, he was a creator of light through stained glass. His work often turned toward the river and the harbor, capturing the way water meets the shore in scenes of wharves and river views. There was a certain groundedness in his approach, a way of seeing the world that favored the naturalistic through a decorative lens.
His technical skill allowed him to move between very different mediums without losing his sense of form. He was as comfortable with the delicate touch of a watercolorist as he was with the sharp, decisive marks of an engraver. This versatility meant his artistic presence could be felt in many places, from the intimate pages of a book to the grand scale of a window.

He passed away on 22 November 1971 in Rotterdam, leaving behind a body of work that spans the spectrum of decorative and fine art.
His contributions remain held in collections such as the Noordbrabants Museum, 's-Hertogenbosch, where his 1943 work titled Untitled resides. Through his engravings, book illustrations, and glasswork, he left a mark on the visual landscape, capturing the quiet, steady rhythm of the Dutch scenery he observed so closely.
