Life and Artistic Development
Hermann Otto Hoyer was a German painter born in Bremen. His journey as an artist was profoundly shaped by his experiences during the First World War. While serving with the 1st Hanseatic Infantry Regiment No. 75, he was wounded during the First Battle of the Marne in 1914 and taken prisoner by the French. During his time as a prisoner of war, he received painting utensils, which allowed him to continue his craft. Following the loss of his right arm during an escape attempt in 1917, Hoyer learned to paint with his left hand and was fitted with a prosthesis by the surgeon Ferdinand Sauerbruch.
His formal training included an apprenticeship as a glass painter and enrollment at the Dresden School of Arts and Crafts. Later, at the Munich Academy, he studied under Hermann Groeber, Carl von Marr, and Franz von Stuck. In 1943, he was awarded the title of professor.
Notable Works and Subject Matter
Hoyer's body of work includes various subjects, ranging from political depictions to rural scenes. His 1937 painting, In the Beginning Was the Word (Hitler Speaks), is recognized as one of the depictions of Hitler as an orator and is part of the holdings of the United States Army.
