Born in 1851, he carries the lineage of prosperous Flemish industrialists, yet his path diverges sharply from the factories and commerce of his family. He holds a degree in engineering, a technical achievement that sits quietly in the background of a life redirected toward the visual arts. The transition is not sudden but marked by
a series of deliberate academic steps. The Academy of Ghent provides his first formal training between 1873 and 1875.
