The Life and Artistic Journey of Antoon De Clerck

Born in Deinze, Belgium, Antoon De Clerck was a painter and visual artist. He was the son of François Fréderic Joseph Isidoor De Clerck, a house painter, and Elvira Marie Van de Walle, who operated a shop for painting, writing, and drawing materials in Deinze. His formal education included studies at the Sint-Hendrikscollege in Deinze, the Stedelijke Tekenschool from 1931 to 1937, and the Koninklijke Academie van Gent from 1937 to 1943. He later studied at the École nationale Supérieure des Arts Visuels in Brussels, where he completed a three-year course in typography under Lucien De Roeck, earning his diploma with highest distinction in 1963.

De Clerck’s professional career included serving as the director of the Stedelijke Tekenschool in Deinze from 1947 to 1951. He also held teaching positions at the rijksmiddelbare scholen of Aalter, Tielt, and Moerbeke-Waas, and at the Koninklijk Atheneum in Deinze, where he taught until his retirement in 1983. In 1998, he established the non-profit association Kunstpatrimonium Antoon De Clerck.

      Artistic Style and Evolution

The work of Antoon De Clerck is characterized by several distinct phases and stylistic interests. His early paintings were influenced by Flemish expressionism. During the 1960s and 1970s, his work reflected influences from hyperrealism, photorealism, pop art, hard edge, and post-painterly abstraction. He sought to create a "visual hygiene," aiming for a sense of peace, silence, and clarity through his compositions. A notable technique in his paintings was the use of white, both as unpainted space and as painted elements, to provide a sense of rest and openness.
