A Life Shaped by the Canadian Landscape

Born in Perth, Ontario, Edmund Montague Morris moved through a world of shifting borders and expanding frontiers. His early years took him to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where his father served as a judge and later as lieutenant governor. This connection to the heart of the country would later define the very essence of his creative output. After returning to Ontario, he sought formal training under William Cruikshank before venturing far beyond Canadian shores. He traveled to New York to study at the Art Students League and eventually found himself in Paris, immersed in the rigorous atmosphere of the Académie Julian and the École des Beaux-Arts.

These European studies brought with them the influence of the Hague and Glasgow Schools, imparting a sense of moody, dark coloring and vigorous brushwork to his hand. He spent his summers wandering through Scotland, France, and Holland, absorbing the light and atmosphere of distant lands. Yet, no matter how far he traveled, his gaze remained fixed upon the rugged beauty of his home. Upon returning to Toronto in 1896, he began to find a deep connection with the landscapes of Quebec, particularly along the Beaupré shore, where he worked alongside fellow artists like Maurice Cullen.

      The Record of a People

A profound shift occurred in his work when he accompanied a government expedition to the James Bay district. Tasked with documenting the negotiations for Treaty No. 9, he encountered the Cree and Ojibwe peoples. This encounter left a lasting mark on his soul. He found that the medium of pastel allowed him to capture the fleeting presence of leaders who might pose only for a moment before moving on. Between 1907 and 1910, he made annual trips through the prairies, traveling from camp to camp across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.

His portraits were not mere sketches but sympathetic records of individuals such as the Blackfoot, Saulteaux, and Sioux leaders. He used both his camera and his pastels to document these faces and the lives surrounding them. His interest was far from superficial; he felt a genuine concern for the conditions he witnessed. This dedication led to significant commissions from various provincial governments, ensuring that the likenesses of these chiefs were preserved in official collections. His work during this period remains a vital historical record of Indigenous leadership during a period of immense transition.

A Legacy of Art and Service

Beyond his individual paintings, Morris was a man of great energy within the Canadian art community. He did not merely paint; he built the structures that allowed other artists to flourish. In 1907, he helped found the Canadian Art Club, an organization created to provide local painters with much-needed opportunities to exhibit their work at home. His leadership extended to the council of the Art Museum of Toronto and various other societies, showing a man deeply committed to the growth of a national identity through visual culture.

His life ended abruptly near Portneuf, Quebec, following an accident in the St. Lawrence River. Even in his passing, his generosity toward the arts remained evident. He left his paintings to the Ontario College of Art to fund a scholarship and bequeathed his collection of artifacts related to Aboriginal life to the Royal Ontario Museum. His papers and hundreds of photographs remain held in the Provincial Archives of Manitoba, offering a window into the meticulous way he observed the world around him.
