Émile Antoine Verpilleux (1888–1964): Pioneer of Colour Woodcuts and Atmospheric Landscapes

Émile Antoine Verpilleux (1888–1964) stands as a singular figure in Anglo-Belgian art history, recognized primarily for his groundbreaking contribution to woodcut printmaking and his evocative depictions of urban landscapes. Born in London to Belgian parents—also Émile Antoine Verpilleux—and a Scottish mother, Edith Beard—he possessed an international upbringing that profoundly shaped his artistic sensibilities.

His formative years were spent studying at Regent Street Polytechnic before relocating to Antwerp’s Académie des Beaux-Arts at the age of 18. This immersion in Belgian artistic tradition instilled within him a meticulous attention to detail and a dedication to mastering traditional techniques, which would become hallmarks of his distinctive style.

Verpilleux's artistic journey began modestly as occasional illustrator for monthly magazines, but a commission to depict “The Charm of Beautiful Nonsense” by E. Temple Thurston ignited his passion for illustration and provided him with the financial stability necessary to pursue his artistic ambitions seriously. Notably, this project propelled him towards exploring the expressive potential of colour woodcuts—a medium he would champion throughout his career.

Collaboration with Colnaghi & Co., a prestigious publishing house, proved instrumental in popularizing Verpilleux’s style during the pre-war years and subsequently after World War I. His masterful execution of multi-coloured woodcuts, exemplified by monumental works like “St Paul’s from Cheapside” and “St Pancras Railway Station,” established him as a leading exponent of this technique.

Serving with distinction in the Royal Air Force during the First World War—receiving a mention in despatches and attaining the rank of Captain—Verpilleux demonstrated not only artistic talent but also civic responsibility. He was honored with membership in the Order of the British Empire in 1919, reflecting his contribution to national morale.

His artwork continues to resonate today, notably residing within the Royal Air Force Museum’s collection—a testament to his enduring legacy as an artist who captured the spirit of his time. Furthermore, Verpilleux's murals adorning St. George’s Town Hall in Bermuda were painstakingly restored after suffering damage during Hurricane Fabian, ensuring that these atmospheric landscapes would endure for generations to come.

  • Notable Achievements: Pioneering colour woodcuts; First artist to exhibit a coloured print at the Royal Academy; Capturing wartime airfield activity with vibrant detail.
  • Influences: Belgian artistic tradition; Impressionism and Symbolism—evident in his atmospheric landscapes.
  • Technique: Mastery of woodcut printing—characterized by meticulous detail and expressive tonal ranges.
