      Early Life, Family and Training

Emile Loubon was born on 12 January 1809 in Aix-en-Provence. He grew up as the son of Noël Augustin François Loubon, a man who had built a life as a wealthy merchant. This comfortable upbringing provided the foundation for his early years in the South of France, but his interests were already turning toward the visual arts.

His formal education in drawing began under the guidance of several notable teachers, including Jean-Antoine Constantin and François Marius Granet. However, it was Louis Mathurin Clérian who left the deepest mark on his developing style. Clérian, who held the position of Director of the École de dessin d'Aix-en-Provence, provided a structured influence that would stay with the young artist as he matured.

A significant shift in his training occurred in 1829 when Granet invited him to join a study trip to Rome. This move away from his home in France allowed him to immerse himself in a different environment for two years. During this time, his focus expanded beyond simple drawing to include a deep acquaintance with architecture, a skill that would inform his later perspectives.

      Activity in Paris and Marseille

After returning to France in 1831, Loubon moved to Paris, where he began to navigate the competitive circles of the capital. He spent his time associating with other young artists of the era, including Thomas Couture. This period of professional growth was marked by significant recognition when he was awarded a medal at the Salon in 1833. However, his life in the city was interrupted by a sudden shift in his family's circumstances. The financial ruin of his father forced him to leave Paris and return to Aix in 1845.

In Aix, his uncle helped him secure a position within the local drawing school. Loubon became known for his efforts to introduce more realistic methods of teaching drawing to his students. His influence eventually extended to Marseille, where he established the first salon for the "friends of the arts." This initiative brought together several notable figures of the time. His professional engagement with the Salon continued long after his return to the south, and in 1853, he held his second exhibition there.

      Technique and Artistic Style

Loubon found his true subject in the rugged heart of Provence. Rather than turning his gaze toward the breezy, coastal landscapes of the Mediterranean, he preferred the rusticity of the hinterland. His paintings often captured panoramic views where the land felt heavy and real. He sought to render the contrasting grandeur of these landscapes, balancing their natural beauty against a palpable sense of harshness. In his scenes, the sun felt heavy, drying the earth into a fine, powdery dust that rose around the herds of animals moving through the heat.

His compositions frequently integrated figures and animals into these wide settings, showing how life unfolded within the landscape. After 1848, his interests expanded to include Orientalist themes, bringing different light and subject matter into his work. As he aged, his palette underwent a quiet, noticeable shift. The bright blues of his earlier years gradually faded from his canvases, replaced by more muted tones of gray and brown.

      Later Years and Death

In 1849, Loubon traveled to the Near East, a period that saw him producing several Orientalist paintings. This time away from the familiar landscapes of Provence offered him new subjects to explore. Despite his professional activity, his personal life was marked by significant hardship. He struggled with serious marital problems and often felt a sense of bitterness toward the art world, believing his work had been misused and that he had been exploited.

His physical health was a constant burden during his final years. He suffered from poor health for a long time, a struggle that eventually took its toll on his body. He succumbed to intestinal cancer in 1863. He passed away on 3 May 1863 in Marseille.
