The Life and Art of Ghitta Caiserman-Roth

Ghitta Caiserman-Roth was a Canadian painter and printmaker born in Montreal, Quebec, to a Romanian-Jewish family. Her early education included attending the High School of Montreal and the École des beaux-arts de Montréal, followed by studies at the Parsons School of Design in New York City. During her time in New York, she studied at the Art Students League and the American Artists School, working with the realist painter Moses Soyer. She also studied graphics under Albert Dumouchel at the École des Beaux-Arts in Montreal. Her artistic practice spanned various media, including painting, lithography, etching, and drawing.

In 1947, she returned to Montreal and co-founded the Montreal Artists School with Alfred Pinsky, Barbara Eckhart, and Harold Goodwin. Throughout her career, she held teaching positions at several institutions, including Concordia University, Sir George Williams College, and the Nova Scotia College of Art. Her work is represented in over 100 collections, including the National Gallery of Canada and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

      Artistic Recognition and Themes

Caiserman-Roth's work explored themes related to the working class and social realism, influenced by her experiences working in war factories in Montreal and Halifax. Her imagery often depicted relationships between mother and child, as seen in her painting First Steps. She was a member of the Jewish Painters of Montreal, a collective that depicted expressionistic images of social realism.

Her professional achievements include several notable honors, such as:

      • Canada Council Senior Fellowship
      • The Canadian Centennial Medal
      • The Governor General's Award
As an associate member of the Royal Canadian Academy, she was the first painter to receive the Governor General's Award for Visual Media and Art.
