The Life and Art of Giovanni De Min

Giovanni De Min was an Italian painter and engraver active in a Neoclassic style. Born in Belluno, he began his training in Padua under Paolo De Filippi. By 1804, he was enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice, where he studied alongside Francesco Hayez and was a pupil of Teodoro Matteini and Pietro Tantini. In 1808, a stipend from the academy allowed him to study in Rome, where he was influenced by Neoclassic artists such as Canova.

De Min dedicated much of his career to the decoration of houses, salons, and churches through fresco and panel work. His notable works include:

      • Mythologic decorations in the Palazzo Cicognara and the Palazzo of the Count Giovanni Papadopoli.
      • The Story of Psyche at the Palazzo Gaudio and Palazzo Treves de' Bonfili.
      • Religious oil canvases such as the Resurrection of Lazzarus and the Apostles.
      • An engraved series in honor of Empress Caroline Augusta of Bavaria.

      Professional Achievements and Later Years

In 1819, De Min was named professor of sculpture at the Accademia. His career saw significant activity in Padua, where he worked on decorations for the Palazzo Pesaro-Papafava and the Palazzo Treves de' Bonfili. He also participated in the restoration of Tintoretto canvases in the Ducal Palace.

Later in life, De Min moved to Ceneda and painted frescoes in various churches and villas throughout the Veneto region, including works in Belluno and Conegliano. His diverse body of work spanned from mythologic subjects like the Education of Achilles to large historic canvases such as the Massacre of Alberico da Romano and his family.
