The Architectural Legacy of James Miller

James Miller was a Scottish architect recognized for his extensive work in commercial architecture and railway stations. Born in Perthshire, United Kingdom, he began his career after apprenticing with Andrew Heiton and working in the office of Hippolyte Blanc. His professional journey included a significant period within the engineering department of the Caledonian Railway, which led to a prolific career designing various railway structures across the West of Scotland. Notable works from this era include the stations at Fort Matilda, Troon, and West Kilbride, as well as the interchanges at Gourock Pier and Green Greenock Princes Pier.

His diverse portfolio encompasses a wide range of building types and styles. He was responsible for the design of the St Enoch subway station and major hotels such as the Turnberry Hotel and Gleneagles Hotel. His work also includes the extensions to Glasgow Central railway station and the Wemyss Bay railway station, which features a circular booking office and a curving timber walkway. In London, he designed the headquarters for the Institution of Civil Engineers at One Great George Street.

Evolution of Style and Later Works

Throughout his lengthy career, Miller adapted his designs to changing tastes and new technologies. His later commercial architecture in the 1930s incorporated elements of Art Deco and Egyptian revival decoration, as seen in the Commercial Bank of Scotland buildings. He utilized white Portland Stone in these structures to combat the effects of pollution. His domestic work included properties such as "Dunloskin" and "Kildonan," which reflected the English Arts & Crafts and Tudor Revival styles.

Miller's professional life was marked by several significant commissions and achievements, including:
