Groningen, 1819. A child is born to Jan Ensing, a local merchant, and Geertje Kuipers. The boy enters the Academie Minerva under the guidance of Jacob Bruggink, absorbing the fundamentals of line and light. By 1840, the art society Pictura recognizes his talent with an award for a painting depicting a taproom at a village inn. Two years later, another prize follows for his depiction of horses in a duck pond.
Life moves toward stability and structure. In 1842, he marries Catharina Jager. His professional identity expands beyond the canvas; he becomes a teacher, shaping minds at the Academie Minerva starting in 1850, and later instructing at various schools for women and elementary teachers throughout Groningen. He is a man of the academy and the classroom.
A significant shift occurs in 1854. The University of Groningen issues a commission: capture the likenesses of nineteen professors to celebrate the opening of their new Academy Building. This task anchors his reputation in the halls of Dutch academia. His brush records the faces of the university's intellectual elite, creating a gallery that remains housed in the Senate Chamber of the current Academy Building.
His technical reach extends into graphic arts and lithography. While his portraits command formal spaces, his sketches capture more fleeting, local realities. During visits to Vlaardingen to see his daughter Paula, he observes the lives of fishermen and their wives, leaving behind drawings that now reside in the Atlas Van Stolk.
The later years find him moving between roles as artist, lithographer, and educator. His work spans various subjects:
He retires from teaching in 1891, settling in Vlaardingen with his daughter's family. He dies on 19 December 1894. His traces remain in the Groninger Museum and the Noordelijk Scheepvaartmuseum, marking a life spent documenting both the prestigious and the everyday.
