The Life and Legacy of Joseph Nāwahī

Joseph Nāwahī was a Native Hawaiian nationalist leader, legislator, lawyer, newspaper publisher, and painter. Born in Kaimū, United States, he was a prominent figure in the history of the Hawaiian monarchy and a defender of Hawaiian nationhood. His life was marked by significant political service, including roles as a teacher and a member of the House of Representatives. He was a leader of the Liberal faction in the legislature and served as a principal author of a proposed constitution alongside Queen Liliʻuokalani. As a Knight Commander of the Royal Order of Kalākaua, he remained loyal to the monarchy even after the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii. His commitment to his country was profound; he was arrested and imprisoned by the Republic on charges of treason, a period during which he contracted tuberculosis, which eventually led to his death in San Francisco, United States.

      Artistic Contributions

Beyond his political and legal career, Nāwahī was an accomplished artist and one of the few indigenous Hawaiian painters to work in Western styles during the 19th century. He is considered a self-taught artist whose surviving works primarily consist of views of his native Hilo. His paintings captured the natural majesty of the region, including Hilo Bay, Rainbow Falls (also known as Waianuenue Falls), and the surrounding volcanoes such as Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, and Kilauea. One of his notable works, a painting of the fiery caldera of Kīlauea, was recognized by the Hawaiian government and sent to the Paris Universal Exposition in 1889. His artistic output is characterized by his depictions of the landscapes of his home.
