The Brussels Academy and the Rise of the Lithographer Brussels, 1827. A young Charles-Louis Baugniet enters the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts. He sits under the instruction of Joseph Paelinck and Florent Willems, absorbing the technical rigors of his craft. By 1827, his hands are already busy with the first attempts at lithography. The medium offers a new way to capture faces. In 1833, the magazine L'Artiste brings his portraits to a

wider audience. His reputation grows through the precise reproduction of features. The work expands into collaborative efforts. Between 1835 and 1842, Baugniet works alongside Louis Huard. Together, they document the Belgian House of Representatives, producing a series of portraits that fix the faces of politicians and officials in print.
