The Life and Art of R. R. McIan

Robert Ronald McIan was a Scottish actor and painter who gained recognition for his romanticised depictions of Scottish clansmen, their battles, and domestic life. Before dedicating himself to painting, he established a career on the stage, performing with the joint company of the Theatres Royal in Bristol and Bath before moving to London. He played at the Covent Garden Theatre and Drury Lane, earning a reputation for playing Highlanders during a period when interest in Highland culture was revived by the novels of Sir Walter Scott.

McIan's artistic career included submitting his first landscape to the Royal Academy in 1836 and exhibiting in the Suffolk Street Gallery. His notable works include:

      • Illustrations in The Clans of The Scottish Highlands, published in 1845.
      • The 1848 sequel, Gaelic Gatherings: Or The Highlanders at Home, on the Heath, the River and the Loch.
      • A portrait of novelist Anna Maria Hall from 1838.
      • Paintings of the 79th Cameron Highlanders commissioned by Colonel Lauderdale Maule.
      • An Incident in the Revolutionary War of America, which showed the 71st Fraser Highlanders' defense at the Battle of Stono Ferry.

      Artistic Themes and Later Years

McIan's early paintings focused on scenes from Highland domestic life, such as women grinding corn and illicit whisky stills. As his career progressed, his work increasingly featured nationalistic subjects celebrating Highland soldiers against the English and overseas. He was elected an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1852.

He was married to Fanny McIan, a painter and art teacher. Together, they were described by a friend as two who went hand in hand through the world. McIan died at Hampstead, north London, in 1856.
