A Life of Scholarship and Antiquity

Théodore Reinach was not a visual artist, but a distinguished French scholar whose intellect spanned numerous disciplines. A man of immense erudition, he served as an archaeologist, mathematician, lawyer, papyrologist, philologist, epigrapher, historian, numismatist, musicologist, professor, and politician. After practicing law in Paris, he dedicated his life to the study of ancient numismatics, eventually holding the chair in ancient numismatics at the Collège de France. His academic contributions were vast, including significant works on the ancient kingdoms of Asia Minor and critical editions of historical texts. His scholarly prestige was recognized internationally, earning him an honorary Doctorate of Letters from the University of Dublin and the medal of the Royal Numismatic Society.

      Villa Kerylos and Legacy

Beyond his academic pursuits, Reinach was deeply connected to the history and architecture of the French Riviera. In 1902, he commissioned the architect Emmanuel Pontremoli to design a Greek Revival house named Villa Kerylos in Beaulieu-sur-Mer. Completed in 1908, this residence became a significant part of his family's history. Reinach served as a member of the Chamber of Deputies and was a member of the Institut de France. Upon his death, he bequeathed the Villa Kerylos to the Institut, ensuring the preservation of the estate which remains a museum today.
