Born in Sneek, Netherlands, Thomas Cool was the son of a marble company owner specializing in mantelpieces and funerary monuments. Following the loss of his mother in his infancy, he demonstrated a talent for drawing at a young age. At eighteen, he was sent to the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp to further his education, where he became friends with the artist Frederik Nachtweh. His training continued in The Hague, where he obtained a teaching certificate for drawing and modeling. Although he initially worked as a teacher at an HBS, he eventually returned to his father's marble business, serving as a branch manager in Rotterdam. During this period, his fascination with Roman culture and marble grew, leading him to eventually abandon the family business to pursue art full-time.
In 1892, Cool moved his family to Rome, settling in an atelier residence in the Villa Borghese park near Villa Strohl Fern. During his time in Italy, he was friends with the Dutch sculptor Pier Pander, whom he painted. His life in Rome was marked by a deep interest in classical architecture and landscapes. In 1896, he returned to the Netherlands due to his daughter's illness, eventually settling in Bussum. There, he built a villa named Geradina, which included a large studio with specialized doors to accommodate his large-scale works. His style was characterized by an approach close to Impressionism, sometimes reaching toward abstraction in his later years. Despite exhibiting in various cities, including Amsterdam and Rotterdam, his large-format paintings were often difficult to sell, and he passed away in 1904.
