Stephen Bone was de zoon van de vooraanstaande kunstenaar Sir Muirhead Bone en de schrijfster Gertrude Helena Dodd. Deze artistieke familieachtergrond vormde een diepgaande invloed op zijn vroege ontwikkeling.
Hij genoot zijn opleiding aan de Bedales School voordat hij zich in 1922 inschreef aan de Slade School of Fine Art.
Echter, hij raakte gedesillusioneerd door de academische benadering van de Slade en verliet de school in 1924 om zich te wijden aan de wereld van de boekillustratie.
Vroege Carrière & Artistieke Ontwikkeling
Bone behaalde aanvankelijk succes als illustrator van houtsneden, waarbij hij werken creëerde voor zijn moeder en andere auteurs. In 1925 werd hij bekroond met de gouden medaille voor houtgravure op de Internationale Tentoonstelling in Parijs.
In 1926 exposeerde hij gezamenlijk met Rodney Joseph Burn en Robin Guthrie in de Goupil Gallery, wat een belangrijke stap betekende in zijn artistieke erkenning.
Zijn veelzijdigheid en uitbreiding van artistieke horizon bleken uit de muurschildering die hij in 1928 maakte voor het metrostation Piccadilly Circus.
Zijn huwelijk met de kunstenares Mary Adshead in 1929 leidde tot uitgebreide reizen door Groot-Brittannië en Europa. Deze reizen waren cruciaal voor de ontwikkeling van zijn kenmerkende stijl van heldere landschapsschilderkunst, waarbij hij scènes en plein air vastlegde, ongeacht de weersomstandigheden.
De Jaren '30: Landschapsschilderkunst & Exposities
Tijdens de jaren '30 exposeerde Bone op grote schaal in prestigieuze galeries, waaronder de Fine Art Society, Lefevre Gallery en Redfern Gallery.
In 1936 presenteerde hij in de Ryman Gallery in Oxford een serie van 41 schilderijen die Britse graafschappen afbeeldden, waarmee hij zijn toewijding aan het vangen van de essentie van het Britse landschap bewees.
Ook in Stockholm exposeerde hij in 1936 en 1937, wat bijdroeg aan zijn internationale bekendheid.
Oorlogskunstenaar & Bijdragen aan de Tweede Wereldoorlog
Met het uitbreken van de Tweede Wereldoorlog trad Bone in dienst als officier bij het Civil Defence Camouflage Establishment.
In 1943 werd hij door het War Artists' Advisory Committee aangesteld als fulltime betaald kunstenaar, gespecialiseerd in onderwerpen gerelateerd aan de Admiraliteit. Deze rol was voorheen bekleed door zijn vader, Muirhead Bone, maar werd door Stephen overgenomen na het tragische verlies van hun zoon Gavin.
Betekenisvolle werken uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog: Hij produceerde talrijke schilderijen van kustinstallaties en marineschepen, inclusief scènes die aan boord van onderzeeërs werden geschilderd.
Bone was getuige van de landing in Normandië in 1944 en documenteerde dit door scènes in Caen en Courseulles vast te leggen. Ook de aanval op het Nederlandse eiland Walcheren werd door hem vastgelegd.
Eind 1944 reisde hij naar Noorwegen, waar hij het wrak van de Tirpitz documenteerde en veroverde marinebases en massagraven van krijgsgevangenen vastlegde.
Naoorlogse Carrière & Nalatenschap
Na de oorlog merkte Bone dat zijn stijl enigszins uit de mode was geraakt. Ondanks het feit dat hij bleef schilderen, ondervond hij moeilijkheden bij het exposeren van zijn werk.
Hij maakte de overstap naar kunstkritiek, waarbij hij schreef voor de Manchester Guardian en humoristische stukken bijdroeg aan de Glasgow Herald.
Bone werkte daarnaast voor de televisie en radio van de BBC en werkte samen met zijn vrouw aan kinderboeken. Samen organiseerden zij een cursus muurschilderkunst in Dartington.
In 1957 werd hij benoemd tot directeur van het Hornsey College of Art.
Overlijden: Stephen Bone overleed op 15 september 1958 aan kanker in het St Bartholomew's Hospital in Londen.
Het werk van Stephen Bone vormt een waardevol visueel verslag van het Groot-Brittannië van het midden van de 20e eeuw, waarin zowel de sereniteit van zijn landschappen als de harde realiteit van de oorlog worden gevangen.
