      A Life of Illustration

Adele-Anais Toudouze was a French fashion plate illustrator born in Ukraine. The daughter of painter and lithographer Alexandre-Marie Colin and a mother who was also a painter, she grew up immersed in the art world. Alongside her sisters, including Héloïse, she learned artistic skills from her father rather than attending an academy. Her professional life was marked by significant productivity; following the death of her husband, the architect and engraver Gabriel Toudouze, in 1854, she worked to provide for her three children.

Her career involved working for over 35 fashion publications. Much of her work appeared in the French magazine La Mode Illustrée, which featured hand-colored prints and text descriptions of Victorian fashion trends. She also contributed to British journals such as The Queen, La Belle Assemblee, and Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine. Beyond fashion plates, she illustrated books depicting historical romantic scenes and leisure.

      Artistic Legacy and Works

Toudouze's work was often mass-produced through etching, engraving, or lithography, allowing for the efficient weekly production of fashion magazines. Her illustrations frequently depicted figures in positions designed to best display clothing. Some of her notable works include:

      • Portrait of a young woman seated in a chair (1842–1842)
      • Portrait d'une dame portant une robe à crinoline
      • A Girl and Her Cat
      • The Colin Family (1834-1835, with Héloïse Colin)

Her prints are held in various public collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museo del Prado, and the National Portrait Gallery, London.
