A Life Between Sea and Canvas

August von Ramberg was an Austrian naval officer and painter. Born in Veselí nad Moravou, Czech Republic, he began his career as a naval cadet, serving on the corvette Donau during voyages to Latin America and North America. His naval career included roles as a torpedo boat commander and navigation officer, and he accompanied Archduke Franz Ferdinand on a world voyage aboard the cruiser Kaiserin Elisabeth.

Following a period of medical leave starting in 1904, he dedicated himself to marine painting, a skill he taught himself. During the First World War, he was reactivated as a "naval painter." His work often captured immediate events, though he also painted from memory and photographs after the war. While primarily known as a marine painter, his repertoire also included landscapes and still lifes. He was proficient in both oil painting and watercolor.

      Artistic Legacy and Works

Ramberg's most significant patron was Miklós Horthy, the last Commander-in-Chief of the k.u.k. Kriegsmarine. His artistic contributions are held in collections such as the Heeresgeschichtliches Museum in Vienna. His notable works include:

In 1928, he became the first president of the Künstlergilde Salzkammergut. He spent his later years in Gmunden, Austria.
