A Life in Art and Education

Garry Neill Kennedy was a Canadian conceptual artist, educator, and administrator born in St. Catharines, Ontario. His career was deeply intertwined with the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD), where he served as president from 1967 to 1990. During this time, he helped transform the institution into an internationally recognized center, bridging the gap between Halifax and major artistic hubs like New York. After his presidency, Kennedy remained at NSCAD as a professor until 2005, continuing his teaching in a part-time capacity until 2011. His academic influence extended through various visiting professorships at institutions such as the California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles, the Beaux-Arts de Paris in France, and the University of British Columbia. He passed away in Vancouver after a battle with dementia.

      Artistic Practice and Evolution

Kennedy’s artistic journey was marked by a transition from material investigations to social critique. In the 1970s, his work focused on the processes of painting, exemplified by his Untitled canvas studies from 1975, where he used graphite to trace the weaves of stretched canvases. He also engaged in the Remembering Names series, a recurring project where he attempted to record the names of everyone he had ever known. By the 1980s, his practice shifted toward large-scale works exploring institutional, corporate, and political frameworks. This period included investigations into office politics and government authority, often utilizing large-scale wall-text paintings in a signature typeface. His work has been held in prestigious collections, including the Museum of Modern Art and the National Gallery of Canada.
