The Artistic Vision of Serge Lemoyne

Serge Lemoyne was a Canadian artist from Quebec who worked as a painter, performance artist, and creator of assemblages and prints. His creative practice was characterized by a collaborative approach, seeking an active engagement between the artwork, the audience, and the artist himself. This spirit of collaboration led him to help found L'Horloge du Nouvel-Age and Le Zirmate, groups that organized events combining music, poetry, dance, and visual effects to create happenings. Throughout his career, Lemoyne explored diverse themes including technology, social justice, and the environment.

A significant portion of his work was dedicated to the subject of popular culture, specifically through a ten-year exploration of hockey. His piece bleu, blanc, rouge serves as a tribute to the Montreal Canadiens, utilizing the colors of their uniforms. These same colors—blue, white, and red—also represent the flags of France and the United Kingdom, reflecting the language heritages that both unite and divide Canada. One of his most recognized works is Dryden, an understated portrait of a goalie mask belonging to Montreal Canadiens star Ken Dryden.

      Exhibitions and Legacy

Lemoyne's work has been exhibited both in Canada and internationally. His artistic journey included studies at the École des beaux-arts de Montréal. His legacy has been honored through various exhibitions, such as Salut Lemoyne!, which featured his work alongside other Quebec artists, and deux nationalismes?, which paired his work with that of Greg Curnoe. In 2011, a commemorative envelope for a postage stamp celebrating the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts featured a portion of his work Dryden.
