The Draftsman of the Front and the City

The ink flows from the pen of Tjerk Bottema in the shadow of a changing Europe. Born in De Knipe, Netherlands, in 1882, his early training begins at the Rijkskweekschool in Maastricht. He moves toward the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, where the influence of Art Nouveau shapes his visual language. He is not merely a painter; he is a man of the line, a designer of advertisements, and a political observer. By 1909, the canvas yields his first major success with the painting Maaiers. A year later, the prestigious Prix de Rome recognizes his talent. He is a man of many disciplines, moving between the delicate touch of a watercolorist and the sharp, biting edge of an editorial cartoonist.

The Great War pulls him from the studio to the Western Front. He travels to the front lines to produce illustrated reports for the newspaper De Amsterdammer. This period of conflict sharpens his eye for the human condition, a skill that follows him as he eventually settles in Paris. He becomes a regular contributor to De Notenkraker, using his graphic skills to navigate the political tensions of the era. His work spans various mediums and subjects:

      The Final Crossing

Paris becomes his home in 1920, a center for his continued exploration of landscape and portraiture. He moves between the urban density of the city and the quietude of Cachan. His hand is as comfortable with the lithograph as it is with the pen. He is a man of movement, having lived and worked in Amsterdam, Antwerp, London, and Berlin. The war returns to claim him in a different way. In 1940, as the German army approaches Paris, Bottema attempts to flee. He boards a ship to escape the conflict, but the vessel is sunk by a German U-boat. He dies at sea, a victim of the very chaos he once documented through his drawings.
