      Life and Artistic Beginnings

Born in Antwerp, Belgium, Tony Van Os was the seventh of nine children born to Napolitaan Van Os, a printer and founder of the daily newspaper Gazet van Antwerpen, and Marie Thérèse Lucia De Wolf. His formal education began at the Sint-Jan-Berchmanscollege in Antwerp, followed by studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and the Higher Institute of Fine Arts in the same city. During his training, he studied under Franz Courtens and Eugène Laermans. His early years were marked by visits to villages along the Escaut, and he later traveled to the Netherlands to study the old masters. After returning to Belgium, he painted in locations such as Termonde, Mariekerke, Bornem, and Weert, where he lived alongside painters Herman Broeckaert and Pieter Gorus.

      Artistic Style and Career

The work of Tony Van Os primarily encompasses landscapes, portraits, and religious subjects. His portraiture captured both notable personalities and common figures, including villagers who posed in his studio. His landscapes often evoked the atmosphere of the Escaut, sometimes utilizing a palette of grays and acid greens. His compositions varied from the somber and restrained to the more vibrant, such as his depiction of a Venetian palace. In 1910, he was awarded the second Godecharle Prize for his history painting, Piéta. He was also a member of the Antwerp Catholic artistic circle, Le Pèlerin, from 1924 to 1931. His works are held in collections such as the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp, which includes his oil painting, The Old Tenant.
