Stephen Bone var sønn av den anerkjente kunstneren Sir Muirhead Bone og forfatteren Gertrude Helena Dodd. Denne kunstneriske familiære bakgrunnen hadde en dyp innflytelse på hans tidlige utvikling.
Han mottok sin utdannelse ved Bedales School før han begynte å studere ved Slade School of Fine Art i 1922.

Tidlig karriere og kunstnerisk utvikling

I 1943 ble han utnevnt til en fulltids lønnet kunstner av War Artists' Advisory Committee, med spesialisering innen Admiralty-motiver. Denne rollen hadde tidligere blitt innehatt av hans far, Muirhead Bone, men ble overtatt av Stephen etter tapet av deres sønn Gavin.
Betydningsfulle verk fra andre verdenskrig: Han produserte en rekke malerier som skildret kystinstallasjoner og marinefartøy, inkludert scener malt om bord i ubåter.
Bone var vitne til og dokumenterte landgangen i Normandie i 1944, og malte scener fra Caen og Courseulles. Han dokumenterte også angrepet på Walcherenøya i Nederland.
Han reiste til Norge i slutten av 1944, hvor han dokumenterte vraket av Tirpitz og registrerte erobrede marinebaser, samt massegraver etter krigsfanger.
Etterkrigstid, karriere og ettermæle
Etter krigen opplevde Bone at stilen hans var i ferd med å gå av moten. Til tross for at han fortsatte å male, møtte han utfordringer med å stille ut verkene sine.
Han gikk over til kunstkritikk, hvor han skrev for Manchester Guardian, og bidro med humoristiske tekster til Glasgow Herald.
Bone arbeidet også innen TV og radio for BBC, og samarbeidet med sin kone om barnebøker. Sammen organiserte de et kurs i veggmaleri ved Dartington.
I 1957 ble han utnevnt til direktør ved Hornsey College of Art.
Død: Stephen Bone døde av kreft den 15. september 1958 ved St Bartholomew's Hospital i London.
