      A View from the Window

Edgard Tytgat spent much of his life looking through glass. Born in Brussels, he spent his early years in Bruges before his family moved to the capital in 1888. He once tried his hand at being a clock-maker, but the precision of gears and springs did not hold him. Instead, he sought the Brussels Fine Arts Academy in 1897. His gaze eventually settled on the world outside his own home. He often spoke of his love for windows, noting that it was from an upstairs window that he captured the impressions of the world. He watched the light, the fairs, and the children through that frame, translating the movement of life into something quiet and strange.

His work carries a certain weight of memory. He painted almost five hundred canvases, alongside hundreds of watercolours, woodcuts, etchings, and drawings. There is a specific way he handles a line—it is often simple, sometimes appearing clumsy or naïve. He did not seek the polished finish of the academies. Instead, he used muted, simplified colours and a sense of strange perspective to build his scenes. His subjects were often found in the bustle of the streets or the quiet of a dream: fairground cavalcades, parades, and carousels. He used these images to find a sense of lost innocence, often painting scenes of childhood to push away the memories of the First World War.

The Language of Form and Color

His approach to a canvas was a way of reducing life to its most basic rhythms. He was part of a group of artists known as the Brabant fauvists, meeting in Auderghem at the home of Auguste Oleffe. These meetings were less about manifestos and more about the fundamental elements of line and rhythm. His style was a quiet collision of different influences:

      • Impressionist and expressionist components
      • Modernist elements
      • Fauvism influenced by the movements in Paris
      • A poetic, dreamy quality that resisted easy categorization

He was a man of many tools. While many know him for his paintings, he was equally at home with an etching needle or a lithograph stone. He was a storyteller who used ink and pigment to explore the absurd and the humorous. His work often felt autobiographical, pulling figures from his own life into his compositions. His wife, Maria, and his friend Rik Wouters appeared frequently in his work, becoming part of the mythology he constructed on paper and cloth.

A Life of Lines and Stories

During the First World War, he lived in exile in England, a period that separated him from the Belgian landscape he would later recreate. Upon his return, he became a leader of the Free Drawing Workshop in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert. This was a place where graduates from various institutes gathered to draw, discuss, and debate. He was a man who moved through the currents of modern art by following his own imagination rather than a strict set of rules. He did not follow a single movement, but rather allowed expressionism to linger as an undertone in his work.

His legacy is found in the way he captured the bittersweet. Whether he was depicting Santa Claus as a gatekeeper in a butterfly garden or a simple scene of a parade, there was always a sense of the fantastic meeting the everyday. He died in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert, leaving behind a body of work that remains difficult to pin down, defined instead by the way he saw the world through a window.
