      A Life in Florence

Born on 16 November 1812, Elisa Louise Counis entered the world in Florence, Italy. Her early years were shaped by the presence of her father, Salomon-Guillaume Counis, a Swiss portrait painter who worked within the Neoclassical tradition and served the court of Elisa Bonaparte. Growingweise under his guidance, she became his pupil, absorbing the technical discipline required for high-level portraiture. This lineage provided her with a foundation in the meticulous demands of oil on canvas.

Her life was marked by the quiet transitions of the mid-nineteenth century. In 1844, at the age of thirty-one, she married François-Louis Lecomte, a Swiss merchant, in her native Florence. The domestic sphere and the studio remained closely linked during these years. However, the arc of her life was cut short far too soon. On 5 December 1847, Elisa passed away in Florence during the birth of her daughter, Lisine. She was laid to rest in the Protestant Cemetery of Florence alongside her parents.

      The Painted Self

While much of her output remains lost to time or resides in unknown locations, the fragments of her talent that remain offer a glimpse into her skill as a Romantic painter. Her work often focused on the intimacy of the human face. One notable survival from 1839 is her self-portrait, an oil on canvas work that demonstrates her ability to capture character through light and shadow.

This specific piece found its way into the permanent collection of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. It was later featured in a specialized exhibition titled AUTORITTRATE, "Artiste di capriccioso e destrissimo ingengo", held at the museum's Sala delle Reali Poste. The presence of her work in such a prestigious institution confirms her standing as an accomplished artist of her era. Her technique reflected the Romantic sensibility of the period, moving beyond the rigid structures of her father's Neoclassicism to find a more personal expression.

      A Fragmented Record

The history of Elisa Counis is one of shadows and light. Much of what we know is reconstructed from family connections and the surviving traces of her canvases. Her identity as an Italian-Swiss artist reflects the fluid borders and peripatetic nature of European artistic life in the 1800s.

The following details define her recorded existence:

      • Birth: 16 November 1812, Florence, Italy
      • Death: 5 December 1847, Florence, Italy
      • Profession: Romantic painter and portraitist
      • Notable Work: Self-portrait (1839), Uffizi Gallery
