The Life and Art of Henri Coroenne
Born in Valenciennes, France, Henri Coroenne was a painter and draftsman who studied at the Académie de Valenciennes. Under the guidance of his teachers, Julien Potier, Abel de Pujol, and François-Édouard Picot, he developed his technical skill. His talent was recognized in 1860 when he received a gold medal at the concours de la Société Impériale de Valenciennes for his portrait of Henri Wallon. His artistic journey was marked by significant works, including a portrait of himself by Émile Lévy, which is held in the Musée des beaux-arts de Valenciennes. However, his career as a painter came to an end in 1887 due to a cruel illness.

Coroenne's repertoire included a diverse range of subjects, from intimate portraits to religious scenes and studies. His portfolio features various portraits, such as those of his mother, Mlle Jeanne Coroënne, and Pierre Joseph Jean-Baptiste Onésyme Leroy. He also engaged with classical and religious themes, producing works like Le Christ au tombeau and copies of masterpieces by Rubens. His collection of drawings includes detailed studies of hands, draperies, and various figures, such as a cardinal and an elderly man. His paintings are preserved in several institutions, including the Musée des beaux-arts de Valenciennes and the Musée de la Chartreuse de Douai.
