Sherwin's technical skill was recognized early by the Royal Academy, where he was a student and earned a silver medal, followed by a gold medal in 1772 for his painting, Coriolanus taking Leave of his Family. He established himself in St James's Street as a painter, designer, and engraver, eventually succeeding William Woollett as engraver to the king and holding the appointment of engraver to the Prince of Wales.
