Born in Kerteminde on the island of Funen, Axel P. Jensen was the son of a farmer. His artistic journey began with training as a house painter between 1900 and 1904, followed by studies at the Technical School in Aalborg. He furthered his education at Kristian Zahrtmann's Kunstnernes Studieskoler in Copenhagen and later studied under Johan Rohde. In 1911, he traveled to Paris with William Scharff and Olaf Rude. While his early years included numerous portraits, he became primarily known as a landscape painter, deeply attached to the countryside. He spent much of his time in Blokhus in Vendsyssel, capturing the fields, marshes, and sand dunes of north Jutland.

Beyond his canvases, he completed decorative assignments at the Aarhus Central Post Office, the Frederiksberg Town Hall, and the Aalborghallen indoor arena, and he designed several postage stamp series.
Throughout his career, Jensen received significant honors, including the Eckersberg Medal in 1926 and the Thorvaldsen Medal in 1946. His body of work includes various landscapes and compositions such as:
