The Artistic Journey of Aleksandr Vasil'evich Kuprin

Born in Borisoglebsk, Russia, Aleksandr Vasil'evich Kuprin began his path in art by taking evening classes at the local Society of Art Lovers while working as a railway clerk. After studying in Voronezh, he moved to St. Petersburg in 1902 for formal training, spending two years in private ateliers before relocating to Moscow in 1904. During this time, he enrolled at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture, studying under Abram Arkhipov and Konstantin Korovin.

Kuprin was a founding member of the Knave of Diamonds arts association. His early works reflected the influence of Russian impressionism through loose brush strokes and an emphasis on light and shadow. Influenced by the works of Paul Cézanne, his paintings from this period often featured Cubist nudes, still lifes, and landscapes that combined decorative principles with analytical insight into objects.

      Later Career and Teaching

In 1918, Kuprin began a long teaching career, serving as a professor at Svomas in St. Petersburg and later as a lecturer at the Vkhutemas design school in Moscow until 1952. As his career progressed, his style shifted; by the late 1920s, more realistic tendencies emerged as he adopted plein air painting. This period included the production of industrial landscapes and works created in Crimea.

      His notable subjects included:

      • Industrial landscapes such as The Plant and Baku: The Oil Fields of Bibi-Eibat.
      • Still lifes including Still Life With Blue Tray, Still Life With a Statuette, and Autumn Bouquet.
      • Crimean works such as The Poplars and The Beasal’skaia Valley.
