Jef Leempoels was a Belgian painter born in Brussels. He began his formal studies at the age of 19 at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, studying under Jean-François Portaels and Joseph Stallaert. Throughout his career, he established an international reputation, earning several distinctions such as an honorable mention at the 1893 Paris salon and a silver medal at the 1900 Exposition Universelle. He also received a gold medal at the Antwerp salon in 1894 and a gold medal at the 1904 Universal Exposition in St. Louis for his painting Destiny and Humanity.

Leempoels was honored by both the Belgian and French governments, becoming a Knight in the Order of Leopold and a Knight of the Légion d’Honneur in 1910. To serve his international clientele, he maintained studios in Ixelles, Paris, New York, and Buenos Aires.
