A Life of Exile and Artistry

Born in Montesquiu, Catalonia, José Balmes was forced to leave Spain during the Spanish Civil War due to his father's political militancy. His family traveled to Chile aboard the SS Winnipeg, a journey facilitated by the Chilean government's aid to Spanish Republicans.
