The Shape of Form and Motion

Born in Holstebro in central Jutland, Knud Hvidberg was a self-taught artist who found his way through the physical properties of materials. In the early 1960s, his paintings leaned toward a Constructivist style, drawing influence from the Linien II association and the work of Gunnar Aagaard Andersen. He did not rely on formal training, but rather on the direct interaction between his hands and his medium.

His sculptural work moved away from the static nature of canvas. He built mobiles using roof gutters, plexiglass, and iron. These pieces were driven by electric motors and paired with shining lights. One specific collaboration with William Soya integrated sound and light, creating an installation that anticipated many modern developments in the field. He sought to link these moving parts to the cosmos and the structures of ancient civilizations.

      Evolution of Symbol and Space

The direction of his work shifted as he moved through different environments. During a time in Rome in the early 1970s, his focus turned toward Symbolism. This period saw a return to the motifs that had appeared in his earlier works, specifically the use of crosses and swastikas. His 1965 POEX exhibition was a moment where art, poetry, and drama merged into a single avant-garde expression.

By the 1980s, his presence moved into the public sphere through architectural decoration. In 1985, he decorated the Vordingborg Educational Centre. His ability to bridge the gap between private studio practice and public space was recognized in 1972 when he was awarded the Eckersberg Medal.
