      The Life of Koloman Sokol

Koloman Sokol was a prominent Slovak painter, graphic artist, and illustrator. Born in Liptószentmiklós, Kingdom of Hungary, he pursued his artistic education through the private schools of Eugen Krón in Košice and Gustáv Mallý in Bratislava. He also studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under Max Švabinský and Tavik Frantisek Simon. Following a period of study with František Kupka in Paris, Sokol moved to Mexico, where he served as a professor of graphic techniques at the University of Mexico City and helped found the Escuela de las Artes del Libro.

His travels took him to New York City between 1942 and 1946, after which he returned to Slovakia to teach at the Slovak University of Technology and Comenius University. Following the rise of Communist power in Czechoslovakia in 1948, he relocated to the United States, settling in Bryn Mawr, a suburb of Philadelphia. In his later years, he lived in Tucson, Arizona.

      Artistic Style and Notable Works

Sokol's artistic practice was inspired by the expressionism of the Die Brücke Group, as well as the works of Vincent van Gogh, Käthe Kollwitz, and George Grosz. While initially focused on graphic techniques, his work later expanded to include drawing and painting. His engravings and drawings often utilized a hard and harsh style to depict social motives, frequently portraying themes of human pain, suffering, and penury.

His repertoire of works includes various woodcuts and several notable pieces, such as:

      • Za cieľom - baníci (Towards the goal - miners)
      • Traja králi (The Three Magi)
      • Bača (Sheplherd)
      • Nárek (Lamentation)
      • Nový mexický zákon (New Mexican Act)
      • Bitka žien (Women's Fight)
      • Matka s dieťaťom (A mother with child)
      • Na ceste (On the road)
      • Stretnutie (Meeting)
      • Odsúdená (Condemned)
      • Starý pltník (The old raftsman)
      • V ateliéri (In the studio)
      • V uličke (In a little street)
