The Life and Education of Tom von Dreger
Born in Brno, Czech Republic, Tom von Dreger was an Austrian painter who specialized in portraiture, history, and genre painting. His formal artistic training began at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, where he studied between 1884 and 1885, and again from 1887 to 1888 under the instruction of August Eisenmenger, Siegmund L'Allemand, and Heinrich von Angeli. Seeking to expand his technical mastery, he traveled to Venice to study at the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice under Eugene de Blaas and Ludwig Passini, followed by a year at the Munich Academy under Alexander von Liezen-Mayer.
In 1892, Dreger moved to Paris, where he spent seven years studying at the Académie Julian. During this period, he exhibited at the Exhibition of the National Society of Fine Arts under the name T. R. de Dreger. After his time in Paris, he resided in Neuschloss before permanently settling in Vienna in 1906. His travels as an artist took him to Transylvania, Germany, Italy, Sweden, the Netherlands, and the United States.
Artistic Legacy and Notable Works

His religious works include two altar paintings created for the Votivkirche in Vienna in 1916, specifically The Adoration of the Three Kings and The Last Supper. His genre paintings include works such as The Color Thief and The Old Violinist. Many of his portraits are held in public institutions, including the Museum of Military History in Vienna and the Historical Museum in Vienna.
