He was born into a world steeped in visual creativity; his grandfather, William Watkin Waite, was a skilled miniaturist, and his father, the Reverend Edward Waite, was an amateur watercolourist. This nurturing environment, further enriched by three of his brothers—Charles, Harold, and Arthur—who also pursued the arts, established a profound foundation for his burgeoning sensibilities.
Before fully embracing his vocation, Waite’s path took a rugged detour far from the idyllic scenes he would eventually master. In 1874, he travelled to Ontario, Canada, to work as a lumberjack.
