Born in Kassel, Germany, Adolf Lins was the son of Rudolph Lins and Bertha. Following the death of his father when Adolf was thirteen, the family experienced a social decline, moving to the Castenalsgasse in the old town of Kassel. Despite these challenges, his mother ensured a strong education for her children. Lins attended the Friedrichs-Gymnasium, graduating in 1872. His formal artistic training began in his hometown at the art school of Kassel, where he studied under Friedrich Müller, Eduard Ihlée, August Bromeis, and Eduard Stiegel.
In 1874, Lins began spending time in the painting village of Willingshausen in the Schwalm, a practice he continued annually until 1908. His presence in the village was noted by locals, and he became known for his spontaneous presence with an easel outdoors. This period of study in the Schwalm, along with friendships with painters in Düsseldorf, eventually led him to settle in Düsseldorf in 1877.
Lins's oeuvre is characterized by several distinct themes and stylistic evolutions. He is frequently associated with the following subjects:
While his earlier works often focused on these idyllic scenes, his style evolved toward a more expressive and intense brushstroke, particularly in his later focus on pure landscape. His work was exhibited in various locations, including Berlin, Dresden, Munich, and Vienna.
